Birmingham Tornado

Postby LoVel » Thu Apr 28, 2011 8:04 am

First of all Robin, Chip(the dog) and I are fine. We have no property damage and we never even lost power.

The Tornado that came through the city of Birmingham was about four miles from our house. It was earily quiet outside as the tornado ripped homes apart just four miles from us. I went out and looked up and could see the clouds rushing into the tornado but down on the ground it was almost still.

While walking the dog last night and this morning I found several pieces of housing debris in the street. Things like pieces of shingles , wall board and insulation. There was even a piece of insulation on the windshield of my truck this morning. It's funny how a tornado can snatch things up into the air and drop them miles from where they were picked up.

I have a nephew and a neice that both go to the University of Alabama. The university is in Tuscaloosa which is where the video of the 1/2 mile wide tornado going behind the football stadium was shot. Luckily my nephew was on campus, there was minimal damage to the campus, and his sister was in a bomb shelter at her place of employment.

There was a lot of death and destruction in Alabama yesterday but luckily as far as I know at this point all of my friends and family are safe.

I'm happy to hear that you and your family members are safe.

I was watching the "live" coverage on the weather channel last night.

Thanks Gerry. I saw this on the news this morning and wanted to share.

"Len Creer, who lives on Hibernian Street in Pratt City, said she didn't hear any sirens. She realized she was in a storm when she saw her pit bull and her German shepherd floating by the window."

Both of the dogs were okay but Pratt City doesn't exist anymore.

Glad you guys are safe!

This insane weather lately is scary as hell. Hopefully it'll calm down as this system moves out to sea -- and hopefully a new storm system won't replace it.

Thanks everybody.

I just found out my nephew was less than a block from all of the destruction in Tuscaloosa yet the house he was in had no damage. He was in the basement with a friend of his. He told his dad the ground was shaking. That was one bad ass storm.

Hey Paul,

Glad you guys made it through without damage & injury. Those twister videos are crazy.

FYI, Hopefully the weather clears up soon because Wes & I are heading down to Deals Gap on Mothers Day. We will be arriving at Fontana Village on Monday around noon. Staying there til Friday morning. We are meeting some friends there as well. 2 from Montreal, 2 from FL, one from GA & another from here in PA.

If you & Robin have any free time that week, feel free to hook up with us somewhere.

We will try and shut down the twisters for a week or so while you guys are down here. Storms like that one don't happen but about once in every 15 to 20 years or so. Thanks for the well wishes.

Robin and I are making two trips up to VT/NY this summer which is 4 weeks of vacation. We would be hard pressed to get another day or two. I can't even see the posibility of it at the present time.

You will love it. There are some great roads up there. I guess you probably already heard that.

Glad to hear y'all are OK. My family in Birmingham, also OK, was near the path but not in it as well. Thoughts and prayers are with everyone in your neck of the woods.
