Saving Money by Camping this year

OK, so last year we stayed at the Kirkside and paid $100 a night - $200 for the weekend. This year many of us wanted to camp and save a few dollars. Sounds good. Well, I just got back from Cabellas in East Hartford. Picked up a self inflating mattress pad ($69) compact sleeping back suitable for a bike trip ($79), miniature air pump tire inflator thingy ($35) and lets see the campsite costs ($24) for the weekend.......

Definitely saving a ton of money here. God I love saving money.

3 nights in the big house, with sheets and towel, 93 bucks. Done.

Then again, some of these guys are avid campers and already have the stuff, and you can use all that gear again next year!

The new Cabellas they opened in East Hartford is like a giant toy store for grown ups. I could have easily spend like $500 there. let's see, maybe a GPS unit, some more camping stuff, boating stuff, firearms galore... No let me take that back you could easily drop $1,000 there in a matter of hours. Worth a visit, if you've never been to one.

Seth its right next to Rentschler Field. Behind Pratt & Whitney. Just follow the signs / directions for the stadium and you will eventually see it. The place is huge.

Rjght-o! I have been a happy camper for years but only last year camped off the back of a bike - I LIKE it! Since motorcyclists generally dig going off the beaten path on interesting, rural roads, well, that where good camping spots are.
This summer I plan on tooling around the Adironacks for a few days and camping for my nights' lodging. It's going to be very interesting, adventurous, and relaxing!

Initially camping gear seems expensive but it pays off in the long run and you can always expand or upgrade later.


On my long trips I camp 2-3 nights for every motel room stay. It breaks things up and saves me a ton of money for gas, food, and drinking! Staying in a motel is nice to give me a break, do laundry and just in case it is raining a lot it gives me a dry spot for the night.

I grew up in North Creek in the central Adirondacks, and know the area well, so if anyone wants suggestions for good camping spots, either free off the beaten path, or DEC campground advice, I would be happy to share what I know. The DEC campgrounds are a bargain, and many are in great locations to use as a base camp for some regional riding.

I'm with Tito on this. To me, a large part of the enjoyment of motorcycle touring is camping at night. My last trip, we camped every night, no motel stays at all, and it rocked. At this point, I think I'd only stay in a motel if it was raining when it was time to stop for the day.
