Damn spambots...

Hey all. Forgive the occasional appearance of spam on this board; the bots have become smart enough to defeat the visual code verification part of the signup process. I'm looking into a more sophisticated version that they can't get past, but in the meantime spam posts may linger for a few hours before I see them and delete them.

I ban them as soon as they post that crap, but I have yet to discover a way of removing them from the member list entirely.

Mark - I'm not quite sure how our free hosting works but what we need is a Spam filter between the Incoming Internet traffic before it hits our web page. If I can get one will they install it at their end for us for free? I am going to look into GoDaddy and see what it will cost to move the whole thing over to them. They can Host our website easily and it can be completely maintained by designated members. This way if we ever decide to branch this thing out into a full blown Triumph Forum it will be very easy. I'll tell you what - If it isn't really expensive I'll pick up the tab. :-)

Mark - I just got off the phone with GoDaddy and they can easily host this site for cheap. The problem is some of the technical questions about web based hosting and web based scripting were over my head. You have to remember I'm just a SysAdmin / NetAdmin not a programmer. Anyhow, if you could do a little phone call to their support and ask the right questions I think we might be able to use them and have even more control of the future. The costs are, at least in my opinion, relatively cheap and I am willing to foot the bill if we are going to try and make a run at another Triumph website. There are many options to explore besides the scripting itself. Would we want to run our own dedicated server locally somewhere, like with me where I have 30mb down and 5mb up at all times. Do we want to run a dedicated server at their place where it is ours and we can manage it? Do we want to run a shared server with other people which keeps the price down? How much storage space do we need in the beginning, how much bandwidth do we need in the beginning? I just can't answer these questions.

Thanks for looking into it, Hedge, but there's no need to deal with it anytime soon. For the purposes of the Bennington Triumph Bash, there's no problem whatsoever leaving the website where it is (which is completely free), and to be honest I prefer it that way because it's running on a server that I'm the administrator of.

If after the Bash the website traffic picks up to the point that Big Heavy World's server and bandwidth can no longer support it, then I'll look into other options, but until then it's much easier just to keep things as is.

As for the spam, there's no need to do anything on the hosting/server end, I just need to configure the bulletin board software to use a more sophisticated visual code verification that the spambots can't read. The Big Heavy World forum already has this installed, and it's been working great. I'm hoping to have time to install it here in the next couple days.

Mark this sounds great. If you feel that we need to move from free let me know I can help defray the cost! :-)

It looks like these assholes are going to keep you busy.
I think you better start working on that sophisticated bulletin board software
what ever the hell that is.
Before these assholes take over.
