Down To The Wire!

Postby mistermellow001 » Tue May 13, 2008 10:07 pm

It sounds like a lot of you are ready to go. My hat is off to you. I'm leaving on Saturday, at the crack of butt, and I'm still doing shit to my bike! I haven't even packed. I'm cracking up because for some reason I don't even care! Okay, I care. I wish I had taken more time to prepare, etc., etc., but the months just flew by (I think there's something wrong with my calendar...tap tap tap).

A funny thing happened yesterday. After doing a butt-load of work on my bike, I decided to sync the carbs. My old manometer (so old it had glass tubes) broke so I finally opened up and assembled the one I bought from newbonneville.com months ago. Well, as soon as I started the engine, it sucked all the fucking mercury right out of the thing and out the exhaust. I must have done something wrong (uh, ya think?). Good thing I wasn't in my garage, I'd have a little Three Mile Island on my hands.

When do you think I should start packing? :)

Oh, and this one bums me out (where's Bucky?). I bought a 3-gallon Tour Tank from him but I never installed it. There's no good place for it because of the position of my top box. I was hoping to have a 6-gallon capacity for the trip. I hope I haven't let him down because I think he said he was glad to see it go to good use.

I can't find my checklist. Has anyone seen it? It's around here somewhere. Oh, there it is, under my un-read book on motorcycle touring. :)

Big Trip!

Postby TonUp » Wed May 14, 2008 6:54 am

Guy!

Air Pressure, oil?

Pack by Thursday. load up the bike Friday night, leave in the garage.

Leave early Saturday morning say 6:00am ride for 200 miles, snack, short 20 minute break, bathroom, drink (stay hydrated) ride another 200 miles, break for lunch, gas, this is the way I do long trips that way I have 400 miles by lunch time.

You can relax the rest of the day and ride another 200-400 miles in the afternoon. Try to get off the road by 6:00- 7:00pm diner, gas up for next day, and get some rest, campground or motel! Take lots of pictures, meet lots of people and smile a lot!!! :-)

See you soon!

Tito

Guy - let me know if you want to sell the Tour Tank. Please put me at the top of the first rights of refusal list!
Look forward to seeing you at the bash!

Guy!
As noted in an earlier message, you are right on schedule! As they say, if it weren't for the last two minutes, nothing would get done.

And Tito's riding info is excellent. I'll re-emphasize, stay hydrated. Peeing is easier than recouperating from de-hydration.

Ride safe my friend.

Sounds like you are right on schedule to me. Make sure the credit card is in the wallet or tank bag. Be safe and enjoy this beautiful country of ours.

I like Tito's advice also. Almost sounds like he knows what he is talking about. I would put a smiley at this point but don't have one laying around.

Aw shucks, I don't mind.

I can relate to last minute bike prep. I crammed a Winter's worth of work into one week to get ready for a recent 2,600 mile tour. After slaving over a hot lawnmower all day, I'd eat dinner then go to a garage down the street and work 'til the wee hours. The garage had no table or bench surfaces, so all the tools and parts were scattered on the floor. I swear I spent 3 nights out of 7 walking around looking at the floor to find tools and parts. Somehow it all came together, and the final delay was only around a three hours late departure.

First Right of Refusal

Postby mistermellow001 » Fri May 16, 2008 3:03 am

Hedge, you've got dibs. I'd deliver the thing right to your door step if I could fit it on my bike. I'm in a bloody hurry to get out of here on time, but we can discuss in Bennington.

Bucky, thanks for the understanding. It might go on my rack, but the top box would have to go.

My office is moving, so I have to pack that tomorrow as well as my bike. Holy shit how time flies.
