Wow, thanks! There are two things I want to do on this trip more than anything else. One is meet this group of great people, and the other is to empty my head of everything except the ride. I haven't had a lot of time to get excited about the trip (pressures from everywhere - long story), so I'm really looking forward to that moment on the road when you realize that you're not going to sleep in your own bed tonight. You'll be able to hear that scream 3000 miles away. YEEEEEEEE HAWWWWW ! ! ! ! ! !

I'm happy for you! Riding is never boring, never restrictive, and does allow ones mind to focus on the moment so you'll be getting just what the Doctor ordered. You've got some great days ahead and I look forward to meeting you at the Bash. Have fun, Touko

Mountain Passes Not Ready For Prime Time

I just learned that the Washington State DOT closed the North Cascades Highway down again due to avalanche hazards. We've had a lot of snow in the Cascades, and today was really nice. Lots of snow melt, and the slopes are cutting loose. The Skagit River was pretty damn high this afternoon.

I really wanted to do that pass on my way out. Oh well, I'll have the rest of the summer to enjoy Washington. Stevens Pass is lower elevation, but still some good scenery. Maybe my strategy now will be to not stop much in my state, since it's available to me all summer, and start my backroads journey in Idaho/Montana/South Dakota. Lots of good shit to see!

The best job in the world up here must be avalanche control. They take an honest-to-goodness World War II vintage cannon up there and bomb the crap out of the slopes to break things loose. Could you imagine how much fun that would be?

Long distance rider!

Yes I could but I have to dis-agree with you. The best job in the world IMHO is Richard Machowicz's job on the Military Channel / Weaponology. This guy goes around trying out all sorts of weapons and blows sit up and gets paid for it! Whose got it better than him?

I'm shutting down my laptop and jamming stuff onto my bike. Thought I'd share my going-away present I got at work today. A little Photoshop, an existing front-page photo, and a very clever attorney/friend, and it's off to the presses. There are some inside, local-ish jokes in the page mock-up, but suffice it to say that most of it was spot on. (There are also some mistakes, like facts about the Bennington Bash, but what do you expect when lawyers lurk on websites looking for dirt on their favorite planners... :)
