Ride Report: 2014 Triumph Thunderbird Commander

Postby Boosted Thrills » Wed Apr 23, 2014 10:55 pm

Last week I was lucky enough to be able to spend a considerable amount of time on six of the nine models that comprise the Triumph cruiser range. This sport bike guy was utterly impressed and I had an ear to ear smile in my helmet every second I was on each saddle. The models I rode included the America LT, Speedmaster, Thunderbird LT, Thunderbird Commander, Thunderbird Storm, and Rocket III Roadster. I would have written something up, but one of my co-workers and good friends beat me to it and shared my sentiments exactly. I thought some of you may appreciate it and wanted to share.

"Ride report: 2014 Triumph Commander.

I was lucky enough to get a chance to ride the entire 2014 Triumph cruiser line this past week, out in the southwest. We went from Phoenix to Prescott, then on 89-A to Jerome and Sedona. From there, we went north to the west rim of the Grand Canyon, and finally ended up in Las Vegas. I threw a leg over the America LT (nimble, stable, responsive and loaded with all the light touring accessories you could want!) I then swapped to the Storm 1700, which offered an amazing chassis, with a motor that pulls like a freight train. Next was the Rocket III Roadster, which I flogged on the switchbacks of 89-A....damn! Amazing power, fantastic handling...I forgot I wasn't on a sport touring bike!! Next up was the T-Bird LT, which is my personal demo bike: quite simply, the most comfortable cruiser on earth. The seat was sublime, and the touring accessories complemented the bike perfectly. This thing is undoubtedly- the best bang for the buck in the cruiser world! Finally, I jumped on the Commander (April 14' release date) and wow!!!! This beast had my name all over it! Nice wide, ranch style bars, floor boards, cast wheels and a style that screams badass. The Commander offers all the comfort of the LT, with a bad boy style reminding me of the Rocket III. The motor was smooth and wickedly powerful, with unreal torque. The chassis was similar to the LT, but sportier, and a bit more nimble in the twisties. Honestly- the Commander surprised more than anything else. From a guy who came up racing and riding sport bikes, the 2014 Triumph cruiser range has done something I never thought possible: it converted me over to the dark side! Do yourself a huge favor, and throw a leg over one of these machines. Take one for a spin, but don't be surprised when you find yourself trading in your old steed on one of these amazing machines. When you do, think of me saying these words, "I told you so!"

Best regards,

I bought a used 2010 late last season. Nice bike-like most Triumph's it needed new shocks (sorry Jeff) but now it's a fine motorcycle.

Unfortunately not, I wish! My dad will be riding the LT for the weekend however and will be coming to his first Bash. I helped him book everything last night.

I tell people that I'll be the first to admit I'm not great at slow speed parking lot type maneuvers, but the new Thunderbirds make me look like a champ!

You'll be happy to know then that both the LT and Commander have new spring rates with 4.3" of travel front and rear, as well as new progressive springs on Showa units which are adjustable for preload in the rear, and beefier 47mm Showa forks up front. The damping rates are also changed to go along with it. I never felt a hint of wobble, wallow, or unsettling of the chassis on any combination of corners and road surface quality I have ridden them on so far, and I have about 1,200 miles logged on LT's and Commanders combined this year.

Suffice to say, I did notice a difference when I was on the Storm compared to the new Thunderbirds, and I did put them through the paces as you've known me to do. I only remembered to take a picture of the Rocket III Roadster foot peg feeler I ground down, but I did even more grinding on the Storm and I ran out of skid plate on the bottom of the LT's floorboard...

We just got in two of the Blue/White LT bikes-have not fired them up yet.
I may get on one prior to the Bash and see firsthand.

I'll add that it's almost never to find a new motorcycle that would not benefit from higher quality rear shocks straight from the factory. But that's another discussion for another day. It'll be cool to meet your dad.

So your dad will have the LT!! He can be part of the FLOCKING photo op, then! I'm still pushing folks on the TRat and Thunderbird forum to get more than the 10 Birds we had last year. Probably won't be able to touch the Tiger count, though.

See y'all in a month!!!

That was exactly my thought! I was going to bring it myself but I have missed T-Road the past two years and would like to hit that up on a sport bike again. This is a perfect way to get my dad to an event, get him on a sweet bike (he has a 2002 Honda Shadow Sabre 1100) and get a new T-bird to add to the flock. I hope to see the T-birds in the 20+ count and will certainly be sending photos to the office of whatever flock there may be; they saw last year's for sure.

He's expanding is dealership (Yamaha, Polaris, Victory and Indian) and was asked to put in his application for Triumph, to replace Spitzie's. He's pretty sure he's going to do it.

No other dealers in a 100-150 mile stretch from Albany, NY.

See you in 2 weeks!

Hmm, I'll have to ask about it and/or take a look at the reporting. That area could use a good dealer for sure.
