Bennington Triumph Bash

Hi New York BTBers-
Jerry and I -we got married on 2/3 - are thinking of hitting Americade after the BTB. We need some recommendations for campgrounds in the area of the event. I've never been to the Lake George area, so I've got nothing to go on for best choices. We're pretty chill, would like a campground that's more quiet than loud, preferably within 15- 30 miles of the rally headquarters, lakeside sites available if possible. We'd love to patronize a state park, but are open to a private campground. I've got a 23 ft Class C RV.

Guidance would be deeply appreciated!

Hi Paula,

The State of NY has some great campgrounds, and Lake Luzerne Campground is very close to Lake George. If you search for NYSDEC, that will get you to their campgrounds pages, and they have a map and plenty of info. As far as private sites, there are several on Rt. 149 just south of Lake George. My daughter worked for the Lake George RV Park, and they run a quiet and very clean campground, with swimming pools and food available, etc. Lots of Americaders, especially from Canada, use their venue. Just east of them is another new campground, but I can't recall its name. If you look on Google maps for campgrounds, they should come up. The DEC map will show you other campgrounds, but I would avoid the one in the village itself, and hearthstone as well, as there will be nonstop traffic noise 24/7 at these two. Rogers Rock is a pretty distant, but beautiful ride if you don't mind being further away. There is also a mini-breakoff rally in Warrensburg for folks who got sick of paying the Americade ticket prices, and this fills the town up pretty fast. I live in Queensbury, about 10 minutes south of Lake George, and know the area very well, so if you need additional info, please feel free to drop me a pm.

Thanks for the reply I went to ReserveAmerica.com and booked at Heathstone before I saw your reply. A good friend of mine is camping there, it turns out. Since we'll be in the RV, hopfeully some of the noise will be blocked....I just looked at Luzerne- maybe I'll think about changing our reservation....

We're also planning a trip to the Catskills for a MC festival in mid-September- we booked camping at North-South Lake. Are you familiar with that DEC park?

Hearthstone is better than the one in town, but the entrance is on a pretty fast stretch of road, so do be careful pulling in and out.
As for the Catskills, I have stayed at just one campground while journeying to rallies in PA or other destinations south and west, and that is Little Pond. It is on a back road in the middle of some beautiful country, but driving an RV on the road to get there wouldn't be my idea of a good time by any means. The campsite itself is clean and very nice, however, and very quiet. My buddy and I called ahead since we weren't going to be able to arrive before the office closed at 9 PM, and they were kind enough to leave some firewood for us and let us pay when we left in the morning. MOst of these smaller DEC campgrounds are run by a caretaker who lives either onsite or nearby, and they are run more like a mom and pop operation. Just rustic and quiet enough, but with clean showers and bathrooms.
If you are traveling through PA, I can also recommend the Steel Steeds campground, which we used as our Triumph Classic Triples rally home last summer. Very laid back and comfortable, with enough cleanliness to be tolerable, but no strict stuff. (It is run by a guy and reflects our male standards of cleanliness )

There is also a nice spot called Moreau State Park in South Glens falls just mintutes off the Northway (I-87). Nice Lake if you want to fish and grocery/convenience store close by. We used to live about 15 minutes south of there and spent many weekends there hiking and swimming.

That's a great suggestion - I had forgotten about Moreau Lake. Some nice riding just south and west of there too!
