Adirondack Ride Food, Gas & Scenery

Postby IH8NY » Fri May 17, 2013 9:17 am

For the folks who are doing the Adirondack Ride, there are some opportunities for food and fuel in the town of Newcomb, which is on 28N, after the town of Minerva. It's approximately 30 - 40 minutes (depending on how you drive) from the town of North Creek.
I grew up in Newcomb so I am a bit partial to it. Go to the website "www.newcombny.com" for some of the info, read on here for the rest.
To start with:
About 1/10th of a mile after you cross the Newcomb town line from Minerva, on the right, there is a plaque which designates the location where Theodore Roosevelt was notified that he had become President due to the death of President McKinley. Kind of a neat bit of history and a possible photo op.
To get to the stores and food, GO STRAIGHT at mile 108 rather than turning right onto the Blue Ridge road. 1.9 miles up on the left is "WDs Country Store". It's your basic North Country "catch all" store for snacks and drinks.
1.9 Miles up on the RIGHT is probably one of the best views of the Adirondack mountains. It is the Scenic Overlook in Newcomb and it's really a fantastic view. I'm not just saying that because it's my home town. There are also REST ROOMS AVAILABLE HERE.
3.5 miles from mile 108 you'll cross the Hudson River. Look to the left here for a great view of Vanderwalker Mtn which has one of the few remaining Fire Watch towers still standing on its peak.
4.5 Miles straight from mile 108 is "The North Country Diner" on the left. There is also GAS HERE!!! They have a varied menu which should have something for everyone and oh yeah, my cousin is the chef.
So, for a short detour from the ride route you can hit up a store for snacks and drinks, have a GREAT photo op of you and your bikes with the Adirondacks as your backdrop at the scenic overlook, AND get lunch and gas at the diner. :plusone:
I hope the moderators don't mind me plugging my home town. I just wanted to let the ride coordinators, and participants know about some other opportunities for food, fuel and frivolity along the ride route. I wish I could join you but I am dog sitting that weekend. Enjoy the ride and PLEASE BE CAREFUL on 28N. The road is not in the greatest condition. It is scheduled for repair in 2014. There have been Moose sighting on 28N as well so be on the lookout for them as well as all the other wild life out there. Keep it Rubber Side Down and enjoy the ride!

Thanks for the tips, man! Too bad you can't make it this year, but glad you signed up. Maybe next year, but keep an eye out for the Northeast Triumph Rally at your way later this summer. A handful of folks on here, hit that one as well. Was hoping to get another STORM out, so we can beat the "Tiger Count". Catch ya out on the road some day!

Thanks for the info, and no, we don't mind you plugging your hometown. :D

Unfortunately the Adirondack Ride is already almost too long, and we have to hurry things along to get back in time to give people a chance to rest/wash up/etc before dinner. So we typically just grab a bite in North Creek, since it's right on the way.

If there were a little more time, I'd also love to include the run up to Tahawus so people can see the inn Roosevelt was staying at when the McKinley assassination went down, and the old town of Adirondac.

Actually, Roosevelt wasn't staying in an inn when McKinley got shot. He was out in the woods near Mt. Marcy. My great uncle, Harrison Hall, who was a guide, was the person who was sent out to find him and his hunting party to tell Roosevelt the news.

Yeah, I think Roosevelt was staying at that inn, but not actually inside it at the time.

This is the place, MacNaughton Cottage:

I assume your great uncle must have been the ranger mentioned in the "Theodore Roosevelt's visit" section. Cool!
